Two Carlsbads, two ways this equipment fails

We repair Sub-Zero built-in refrigeration and wine storage in Carlsbad and La Costa, along with the Wolf, Viking and Thermador equipment fitted into the same kitchens. Refrigeration and wine cabinets are the bulk of the work here, and they are what the van is loaded for.

Carlsbad is really two service environments inside one city, and after enough calls the difference stops being weather talk and starts being a parts list. The coastal side, Olde Carlsbad and the streets above Batiquitos Lagoon out through Aviara, sits in salt air and a marine layer that hangs on most mornings from late spring. The inland side, La Costa and Bressi Ranch and the blocks east of them, gets far less salt and considerably hotter afternoons. The same model of refrigerator installed in those two places does not fail in the same order.

On the coast the condenser is the first thing we look at. A refrigerator condenser is a fan pulling outside air through close-packed aluminum fins all day, and near the water that air carries salt. The fin surface dulls, the pack loads up, and the unit starts running warm through the afternoon and catching up overnight. Owners describe that as happening only sometimes, which is exactly what a restricted coil looks like before it becomes a compressor problem. Door gaskets go the same way here, taking a permanent set earlier than they would inland because they never get a chance to dry out.
