What the Coastal Air Does to a Built-In in Carlsbad
Carlsbad runs from the sand up into the hills, and a refrigerator at one end of it does not fail the way the same model fails at the other. West of the freeway the machine is fighting salt; east of it, in La Costa and Bressi Ranch, it is fighting heat and clearance. The parts list changes with the address.
Why the condenser goes first on the coastal side
A condenser is a fan pulling outside air through a close-packed stack of aluminum fins, every hour the unit runs, and near the water that air carries salt. The fin surface dulls, the pack loads up with a gray felt of salt and dust, and the unit starts running warm through the afternoon and catching up overnight. Owners describe that as happening only sometimes, which is exactly what a restricted coil looks like in the months before it becomes a compressor problem. The three-to-six-month cleaning interval printed in the manual was not written for a house four streets from the lagoon.
The same air takes the set out of a door seal
Gaskets go the same way here. A seal that never gets a chance to dry out takes a permanent set earlier than it would inland, and once it stops pulling flat along the hinge side it admits humid air that the defrost cycle then has to shed. That is why returning frost in a coastal cabinet is more often a door problem than a heater problem.
Inland, the fault moves inside the cabinet
Two or three miles east the salt stops and the afternoons get hotter. In La Costa and Bressi Ranch equipment is more often set into a bar run or a butler’s pantry with very little clearance, and what we replace is evaporator fans, defrost heaters and thermistors rather than condensers. Say which part of Carlsbad you are in when you call.
