Common fault

Why is my Sub-Zero refrigerator not cooling?

Short answer

Start with the freezer.

The reasoning behind that

On a Sub-Zero built-in the two compartments run on separate sealed systems, so a freezer that is still hard-frozen proves the refrigeration itself is working and puts the fault on the refrigerator side: its evaporator fan, a defrost failure icing that coil, or a thermistor reporting that compartment out of range. If both compartments have gone warm together, look lower. On coastal Carlsbad units that is most often a condenser loaded with salt-laden dust, which is a cleaning rather than a repair if it is caught before the compressor has spent a summer at high head pressure.

How the diagnosis goes

What we check, in order: which compartment is warm and by how much, read at the shelf rather than off the display; the evaporator fan, by ear and then by hand with the rear panel off; the defrost heater and its thermistor; and finally the condenser and its fan. The order is deliberate. The cheap causes are also the likely ones, and nobody should be paying for a sealed-system diagnosis before a fan has been ruled out.

What changes with your address in Carlsbad is where that list is likely to stop. West of the freeway, in Olde Carlsbad and the streets above the lagoons, the condenser is the first suspect any time both compartments drift together and the unit sounds like it is running constantly. Inland, in La Costa and Bressi Ranch, single-compartment faults dominate and the evaporator fan is the part that comes off the van most often.

If that matches what yours is doing, say so when you call — it decides which parts come on the van.

Reviews

Our wine column up in La Costa held its set point on the display while the bottles on the lower racks sat warm. He read each zone at rack height, found the circulation fan in the bottom zone had quit, and swapped it. Nothing beeps on those, which is the scary part.

The freezer drawers under our bar in Bressi Ranch had started frosting at the edges and everything inside was one solid block. Condenser had never been cleaned since the house was built, apparently. He cleaned it, changed the seal, and the drawers have been fine since.

Cubes came out small and half hollow so I assumed the ice maker was done for. He measured the water pressure at the valve first, found the filter years past due and scale on the fill tube. The water here is hard on these machines. Full size cubes again without replacing the module.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Which parts of North County do you cover besides Carlsbad?

Carlsbad and La Costa are the core of the work: Olde Carlsbad, Aviara, Bressi Ranch and the estates across 92008, 92009, 92010 and 92011. We cover the surrounding North County coastal cities as well, including Encinitas, Oceanside, San Marcos and Vista. Mention the street when you call. Salt air or several miles inland changes what we expect to find behind the grille.

Do you answer the phone at night and on weekends in Carlsbad?

Yes, 24 hours a day, every day. Refrigeration is the reason: a freezer that fails on a Saturday evening in Aviara has spoiled everything worth keeping by Sunday, and a wine column drifting warm does its damage quietly over weeks. Same-day service is the goal, and if the schedule genuinely cannot take you, you hear that on the phone.
