Repair or replace a built-in refrigerator: how the arithmetic actually works
For most faults on a built-in refrigerator, repair wins, and the reason has less to do with the machine than with the hole it sits in. A built-in is a fitted part of the kitchen. It was specified to a height, a width and a depth, it carries a custom panel or a trim kit made for that run, and the cabinets, the countertop and often the flooring were installed around it. Replacing one is rarely a matter of wheeling the old one out and the new one in. The faults that genuinely justify replacement are a short and identifiable list, and working out which list your fault is on is the entire decision.
Ask which part failed before you ask how old it is
Age is the first thing owners bring to this decision and the least useful thing in it. A twenty-year-old cabinet with a failed evaporator fan is a cheap repair on a machine with years left in it. A six-year-old column with a leak in the freezer evaporator is a serious job. The parts that decide how long one of these lasts are the case, the liner, the insulation and the doors, and none of them wear out on a schedule an owner would notice. What wears out is a short list of moving and electrical components, every one of which is replaceable. So the question that decides the money is not how old is it. It is whether the fault sits outside the sealed refrigeration circuit or inside it, because those two categories are separated by an order of magnitude and nothing in between.
The cheap column, and why most calls land in it
Most of what goes wrong on a built-in belongs here, and none of it argues for replacement. An evaporator fan is a small motor behind a panel; when it stops, one compartment goes warm while the other stays exactly where it should be, and the sealed system was never involved. A defrost heater and its thermistor are the pair behind frost that returns after you clear it. A door gasket that has lost its magnetic set admits humid air continuously and quietly makes every other fault look worse than it is. An ice maker module, a water inlet valve, a condenser fan, a control board once a sensor has been proved to be telling the truth: these are ordinary parts, usually a single visit. This matters to the arithmetic because a cabinet that has had two or three of them replaced across twenty years has not been limping along. It has been maintained.

- Defrost heater and thermistor: frost that comes back after you clear it
- Door gaskets, hinges and closers: a door that looks shut and is not
- Condenser fan and a coil cleaning: warm through the afternoon, recovered by morning

- Control board, but only after the sensors feeding it have been tested
The expensive column: anything inside the sealed system
One category of fault costs real money, and that is a refrigerant leak or a failed compressor. The work is a different discipline from swapping a fan: the charge is recovered, the failed component is replaced, the circuit is evacuated to pull moisture out of it, and a fresh charge is weighed back in. It takes hours rather than minutes and it requires certification to handle refrigerant legally. On a dual-refrigeration cabinet there are two of these systems, so a failure in one says nothing about the other. Even here, replacement does not automatically win. A sealed-system repair on a cabinet in sound condition is usually a fraction of what it costs to put a different built-in into an existing opening once the cabinetry work is counted. The cases where it stops being worth it are specific rather than general, and they are listed further down.
The cost that never makes it into the comparison
This is where most repair-or-replace comparisons quietly go wrong. The price of a new built-in is the price of the appliance. It is not the price of the change. Built-in dimensions have moved over the years, so a current cabinet is not guaranteed to fill an opening cut for one installed in the nineties, and the difference gets resolved with filler panels or by cutting cabinetry. Custom door panels were made for a particular bracket pattern, so a different machine generally means new panels, which means matching a finish that may be discontinued and has been aging in California sunlight for fifteen years. A countertop returning into the opening, a toe kick rebuilt around the old unit, a water line run to a specific point, flooring that stops at the old footprint: each one is a separate trade. In kitchens remodeled twenty or thirty years ago, and Carlsbad has plenty of those, the opening was built to the appliance rather than the appliance to the opening, which makes measuring the first step rather than an afterthought.

When replacing is genuinely the right answer
There are real cases and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. A cabinet whose liner has cracked, or whose foam insulation has taken on water, is finished, because the insulation is the appliance and it cannot be replaced in your kitchen. A unit that has had a sealed-system repair and then leaks again somewhere else is telling you something about its overall condition rather than about that one joint. Doors that have been forced, hinge mounts pulled out of the case, a cabinet racked during a move: that is structural damage and it does not get better. There is also a legitimate non-technical case, which is a kitchen being remodeled anyway. If the cabinetry is coming out regardless, the cost of the opening drops out of the arithmetic entirely and a new unit competes on its own sticker for the first time.
- A cracked liner, or foam insulation that has taken on water
- A second sealed-system failure at a different point on the same machine
- Structural damage to the case, the doors or the hinge mounts
- A remodel that was going to open the cabinetry anyway
- A machine with an unknown history that has already been opened up and worked on badly
Four questions that settle it
Run these in order and the answer usually appears before anyone quotes anything. First, is the fault inside the sealed system or outside it? That can be established before parts are ordered, and if the answer is outside, repair almost always wins. Second, what condition is the cabinet in, as distinct from the machinery? Look at the liner for cracks, press the door foam for softness, check whether the case still sits square in its opening. Third, what would actually have to happen to the kitchen to fit something different, measured rather than assumed? Fourth, how many faults are there? One failed part on a sound cabinet is a repair. Three unrelated failures inside a year on a machine nobody has records for is a pattern, and a pattern is the only argument from age worth listening to.

How old is too old for a built-in refrigerator?
There is no number, and any technician who gives you one is guessing. These cabinets are built to outlast the kitchen around them, and what decides the remaining life is condition rather than years: whether the liner is sound, the insulation dry, the doors still pulling flat, and the condenser cleaned over the years or ignored. A well-kept twenty-year-old cabinet beats a neglected ten-year-old one.
A technician told me it needs a compressor. Should I just buy a new refrigerator instead?
Ask two things: which sealed system it is, since a dual-refrigeration cabinet has two and one failure says nothing about the other, and what condition the cabinet is in. On a sound case, a compressor usually costs well under what it takes to fit a different unit into a finished opening with panels, trim and cabinetry counted. A cracked liner or wet foam flips that.
Will a new built-in drop straight into my old opening?
Sometimes, but measure rather than assume. Standard built-in heights, widths and depths have shifted over the decades, and openings in older kitchens were often built around the specific appliance that went into them rather than to a published rough-in. Take the height, width and depth, note whether the countertop returns into the opening, and get those numbers in front of whoever is quoting.
