Classic, Designer or PRO: which Sub-Zero is actually in your kitchen
Look at the door edges and at the top of the cabinet. A stainless frame showing around the doors with a grille above them is a Classic built-in. A front that sits flush with the cabinetry, panels running edge to edge with no metal visible anywhere, is a Designer unit. Heavy stainless doors with full-width tubular handles, or a glass door on the refrigerator side, is a PRO. Sub-Zero renamed these lines a few years ago, so the manual in your kitchen drawer may say Built-In where the current catalog says Classic, and Integrated where it now says Designer. The machine did not change when the name did, but which line you own decides where the condenser sits, how much of the visit is door work, and what a technician needs to bring.
Tell them apart without opening anything
Start at the door edge, because that is where the three lines separate most reliably. On a Classic the cabinet has a visible stainless flange around the opening and the doors sit inside it, so even when the doors carry custom wood panels there is a metal line framing them. On a Designer unit that frame does not exist: the panel covers the whole door, the gap around it matches the gap on the cabinets either side, and from a few feet away the refrigerator reads as furniture. PRO units make no attempt to hide, with thick stainless doors, a full-width handle bar and, on the wider models, the option of a glass refrigerator door. If the front still leaves you guessing, the data plate settles it, and on refrigeration it usually sits inside the cabinet near the top on one of the side walls.

Classic: the framed built-in, and the grille you may be looking for in the wrong place
The detail that matters most on a Classic combination cabinet is where the machinery lives. The compressors, the condenser and the condenser fan sit in a compartment at the top of the unit, behind the grille above the doors, which is not where most owners go looking. Cleaning that coil means the upper grille comes off and the work happens above your head rather than at your knees. It also means the machine compartment rejects its heat upward, so a Classic installed with a soffit or a cabinet closed tight over the grille runs warm through a hot afternoon and catches up overnight, which the owner reasonably describes as intermittent. Undercounter units, refrigerator drawers and most wine cabinets are the opposite: their machine compartment is at the base and they breathe through a grille at floor level. Check yours before you buy a coil brush.
Designer: flush fronts, and why the cabinetry joins the diagnosis
A Designer unit is built to disappear, and the tolerances that make that possible are what a technician has to respect. The panel is made by the cabinet shop, hung on the door with adjustable brackets, and set so its edges line up with the doors beside it within a millimeter or two. That panel is heavy, often a solid slab carrying the same edge profile as the rest of the run, and the door seal has to keep pulling flat against that weight several times a day for years. So when a Designer column starts running warm, panel and hinge alignment belong in the first three checks rather than the last: a door that hangs square and still fails to pull flat at the top corner admits room air continuously, and no amount of sensor testing will fix it. Designer refrigeration is also more often single-compartment, an all-refrigerator column beside an all-freezer column, each with one sealed system of its own.

PRO: commercial hardware, glass doors and weight
The PRO line borrows its look from commercial refrigeration and borrows some of the consequences with it. The doors are heavy, the hinges and closers are doing real work, and door sag turns up here earlier than on the other two lines for no reason other than mass hanging on the same geometry. On the glass-door models the pane is heated to keep condensation off it, and a pane heater that has quit reads to an owner as a humidity fault inside the cabinet when it is really a door fault on a circuit that has nothing to do with cooling. A glass door also passes more heat into the compartment than an insulated one, so a gasket that has lost its set costs more here and shows itself sooner. Underneath, the refrigeration is the same architecture as a Classic of the same generation, so the diagnostic logic does not change; the hardware around the doors does.

Dual refrigeration, and the shortcut it hands you
Whichever line you own, if it is a combination cabinet built from the mid-1990s onward it almost certainly holds two complete refrigeration systems: a compressor and evaporator for the fresh food side, a second compressor and evaporator for the freezer, and no air path between the two compartments in either direction. That is why produce keeps in these and why the freezer never smells of last night's dinner. It is also the fastest diagnostic tool an owner has. A freezer that is still hard-frozen while the refrigerator has gone warm has just proved that the refrigeration side of the machine works, which confines the fault to the refrigerator's own circuit: its evaporator fan, its defrost, or the sensor reporting that compartment. Both compartments drifting together points at something shared instead, most often the condenser or the supply of power to the unit. Units from the generation before dual refrigeration ran one system for the whole cabinet, and that shortcut does not apply to them.
What the answer changes about a service call
Knowing your line before you call is often worth more than describing the symptom, because it decides what comes off the van and how long the visit runs. Classic and PRO work is mostly appliance work: the grille comes off, the machine compartment is reachable, and the doors are the manufacturer's own. Designer work is appliance work plus joinery discipline, because the panel has to come off and go back exactly where it started, and a panel returned a millimeter low is the sort of thing an owner notices every day afterward. Age matters as much as line. An older Classic puts the diagnosis in the components, where a meter settles it, while the newest columns move much more of it onto the control board and the sensors feeding it, so the first job there is proving whether a sensor is lying before anything gets replaced.

Frequently asked questions
My paperwork says Built-In and the dealer said Classic. Are those different machines?
No. Sub-Zero renamed its refrigeration lines a few years ago: Built-In became Classic and Integrated became Designer, while PRO kept its name. Nothing about the appliance changed at the rename, so an older manual and a current parts listing can describe the same cabinet in two vocabularies. Work from the model number on the data plate, which is what a parts supplier will ask for.
Can a Classic be made to look like a flush Designer unit?
Not really, and it is a cabinetry question more than an appliance one. The stainless flange on a Classic is part of the cabinet structure, not a trim piece that unbolts, so the framed look stays even with custom panels on the doors. What you can change is the panel material and the handles. A flush front is decided at specification, not afterward.
Do Designer columns cost more to repair than a Classic?
The refrigeration parts are comparable: fans, thermistors, defrost heaters and gaskets are the same class of component. Two things differ. The panel has to come off and be reset carefully on any job involving the door, which adds time. And a pair of columns is two machines with two sealed systems, so an all-refrigerator beside an all-freezer is twice the equipment of one combination cabinet.
