What is the loud humming or rattling from my refrigerator?
Short answer
New noise from a built-in nearly always comes from behind the grille rather than from inside the cabinet.
The reasoning behind that
A condenser fan rattles when debris reaches it or when its bearing begins to go, and compressor mounts harden with age and hum through the cabinetry. On Carlsbad units near the water there is a third cause worth naming: a fan shroud or bracket whose fasteners have corroded enough to let the assembly buzz against the chassis. None of this is an emergency the day you hear it, but a fan left to seize stops the unit rejecting heat, and by then the repair is no longer a fan.
How the diagnosis goes
What we check, in order: whether the noise tracks the compressor or the fans, which the grille coming off usually settles in the first minute; the condenser fan blade and its bearing; the evaporator fan behind the rear panel, which sounds different and is normally a warble rather than a rattle; the compressor mounts; and every bracket and shroud fastener, because on a coastal unit corrosion shows up at the fixings before it shows up anywhere else.
Describe the noise by when it happens rather than by what it sounds like. A rattle that starts a few minutes after the unit kicks in and stops when it shuts off is on the condenser side. A warble or a clicking that is loudest with the doors open is the evaporator fan. A low hum you feel through the cabinetry more than you hear is the mounts. Those are three different parts, and getting it right on the phone is what turns this into a single visit.
