Common fault

Why is my oven not heating properly?

Short answer

Ovens in these kitchens are Wolf, Viking or Thermador, since Sub-Zero has never built one. Uneven browning and long cooking times are almost always a temperature sensor that has drifted and a control obeying it faithfully. Carlsbad Sub-Zero Specialists, Carlsbad: (858) 779-0698.

The reasoning behind that

No heat at all is usually a glow-bar igniter on gas, or the bake element on electric.

How the diagnosis goes

What we check, in order: the real cavity temperature against the setpoint, taken with a probe rather than read off the display; the oven sensor’s resistance against spec; the igniter’s current draw on a gas oven, because a glow-bar can still light up and no longer pull enough to open the gas valve; the bake and broil elements on an electric; and the door latch, which is what strands an oven after a self-clean cycle.

Carlsbad kitchens usually pair a Sub-Zero column with a Wolf range or a Thermador suite, so the cooking equipment and the refrigeration in the same run are two different trades on one visit. Say which make is on the front when you call, and roughly what the oven is doing — cool, slow, or dead — and the van is loaded for it before it leaves.

If that matches what yours is doing, say so when you call — it decides which parts come on the van.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What parts do you fit on a coastal Carlsbad unit, and is the work covered afterward?

We fit manufacturer-recommended components and stand behind our parts and our labor. Pattern parts sell cheaply for evaporator fans, thermistors and ice maker modules, and on a coastal unit working harder than an inland one they are back on the fault list within a season. The kitchen is from an older Carlsbad remodel. Is a twenty-year-old built-in worth repairing?

Usually yes. A built-in is a fitted part of the kitchen, so replacing one means matching an opening, a panel front and a trim line that may no longer be made, which turns a repair into a cabinetry job. Fans, defrost heaters, thermistors, gaskets and ice maker modules are all replaceable. That is a two-minute call to Carlsbad Sub-Zero Specialists on (858) 779-0698.
